I'm a little bemused. Does this really translate as "we got caught,
but we were innocent, and besides, this proves there *is* a conspiracy
by the other lot?"

It's like trying to settle a squabble between twelve-year-olds. "No,
he was poking *me*, I didn't do anything!"
