It all depends on the statement. If the statement is correct, but needs
citation, then the tag merely says that it needs to be cited. If you have
reason to doubt the information, then you can remove it after a reasonable
amount of time - if you have reason to suspect that the original author
didn't get a chance to see it, drop them a note.
Wikipedia is full of uncited information. All of it needs to be cited
eventually, but the mere fact that something is uncited isn't enough of a
reason to remove it.
