Wikinews was never considered a fork. It's a different beast altogether:
- Original reporting vs. WP:NOR
- Deadline oriented vs. no deadline in Wikipedia
- Snapshot of situation vs. constantly evolving story

There's no reason at all why one should eliminate the other.
