This is a standard option in MediaWiki, not something specific to
Wikia. A few Wikimedia wikis run it (meta and board). I don't know why
it isn't used everywhere since it's an incredibly useful feature.

An alternative is to get the rss feed of all your talk pages and
aggregate them.
