I know this has already been well-discussed, but I'd like to thank Raul for
taking off the CheckUser nominations. While I supported the proposal, I was
under the impression that more policy would be discussed afterwards, Board
permission sought, and then another final vote. *Never* did I imagine that
hours after the vote closed (I note that it was so close that if I had
changed my mind and voted oppose, the proposal would have failed) that there
would be two nominations already.
But that's all past - we should focus on the future. IMO, some of the
community has an incorrect perception regarding CheckUser. It's *not*
another level on the so-called Wikipedia hierarchy, and I don't think anyone
"deserves" it. With board approval or Jimbo's approval, it should be limited
to ArbCom members and bureaucrats only, and even then, they should undergo a
strict community vote. CheckUser should *not* be given liberally to any
admins wishing to see someone's IP address. Unlike adminship and
bureaucratship, this has huge implications off the project and in "real
life".
I hope everyone takes CheckUser a lot more seriously. In fact, I have half a
mind to go onto the proposal and change my vote to oppose, given the way
this has been handled. Please take CheckUser as a serious tool that should
only be given out extremely sparingly, if ever.
Many thanks.
