actually there is a plugin for directshow ( which windows media player uses ). 

Furthermore, shouldnt we also reccomend Ogg FLAC; Ogg Speex and Ogg
Theora on that page, perhaps move it to Wikipedia:Media, or better yet
to meta as it concerns all projects.
