Well, 2 out of 2 people commenting so far think I'm wrong, so effectively immediately I'm banning myself from Wikipedia (I'll still participate on this mailing list, though).

This is an inappropriate use of sysop powers. You were involved in an edit  
war regarding that article. You should have asked another sysop to protect  
the page, or to block that IP (which, as far I can tell, is hard to  
justify, given that the user has only made one edit).

Please do not use your sysop privileges to block users who make edits you  
disagree with.
