I'm a bit confused on the role of the 'product manager' and
'scrummaster'... to me they're mostly the same thing. It seems like you're
implying that only engineers can be scrummasters? (Basically, what does a
scrummaster in your world do?)

The PM we just hired in fundraising is starting to massaging our mingle
install; and will presumably join us for our stand ups and retros. Given
that they're responsible for making sure things get done, why are they not
capable of being a scrummaster.

After doing some research on random websites; I came across [1] which
actually seemed like a scummaster is a mix between what I know as a
'technical project manager', 'a process wonk', and what we call a
'community liason'. It also seemed like an invented position that could be
solved by everyone on the team subscribing to the same agile methodology,
some community input, some QA input, and some communications skills...
