Solution that appears to work:

1)  svn update your 'rewrite' installation
2)  svn checkout http://httplib2.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/httplib2 into your 
python2.6 site-packages directory, or to some other directory on your python 
path (you'll want to delete any existing python2.6 httplib2 installation 
first)

This should allow the rewrite branch to work under Python 2.6 with no 
warnings (but let me know if you still have problems).
