[Mediawiki-l] php not found in version 5.3.4 (was: how to upgrade running 1.9 to 1.16 with all the extensions)

I tried this now on a different machine running Kubuntu 8.04
with php5.2.4 installed. There 
 php maintenance/update.php


Returns php: Command not found.

I have no access not my newer machine where the command
worked, can somebody give me a hint what to do, where is php
supposed to be located?
