Thanks. I will try all of these suggestions and report back.
However, I did some research and it appears there is a long-standing
(over 3 years) bug that reports problems producing thumbnails for large
png files (see https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9497). This
bug is still open, so it is possible I have run up against an unresolved
problem.
