[Mediawiki-l] References and templates

Hello all,
        I was wondering if there were extensions for mediawiki that 
helped with citing references.  On wikipedia one can use the <ref></ref>
and <references /> tags but that doesn't work on mediawiki sites after 
initial installation.  Perhaps there are templates also.  I'm new to 
mediawiki obviously.
