[Mediawiki-l] How to include own image files as part of the user interface

I want to use some graphics files (icons etc.) as part of the user
interface, they should not be treated as content. 
 
Haven't been able to find help pages describing how to do this, which
directory to use etc. I have full ftp acces.
 
Can someone point me to the relevant help pages.
