[Mediawiki-l] Giving MediaWiki permission to use ImageMagick on an OS X System

The apache included with OS X uses the www user of group www. (On OS X  
Leopard there is a preceding underscore)

do "sudo chmod +x `which convert`" (provided that your convert is in  
the path) then try. Also make sure EVERY directory under /path/to/ 
mediawiki/images/ is writeable by www:www or on Leopard _www:_www
