[Mediawiki-l] Only article authors can edit their articles

Try http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Simple_Security 

But it'll not automatically restrict only to author. 
I'm just thinking aloud: is it possible to include the default text
(there's some parameter for that, right?)  as
{{#security:edit|{{CURRENTUSER}}}}? Here {{CURRENTUSER}} stands for the
parser function of the uuser-- I'm not sure whether such a function
exist or not :)

It gets just a little bit more difficult because  the original author of
a document isn't an information that is 'attached' to a page revision
(only the last editor is).  For sure, if one makes the assumption that
*only* the author is ever allowed to edit the page in question, then one
just has to pull out the username of the page's last revision... but
then, this does not leave much more for special groups (e.g. sysop) to
come in and manage the pages in question.

Of course it can be done but, depending on method used, it can translate
to slower transaction rates.
