Well I don't know the manner in which these things get started but I am
willing to stump up some cash to get the ball rolling on development.
Maybe if we have enough interest there is someone willing to attack this and
create an extension?

The main detraction from editing, I have found, is that people don't
want to stop READING while they edit. That is, they want to be able to
edit the page ON THE SAME PAGE as the main article, i.e. without
switching page.
That is, AJAX edit boxes are highly in order.
