Dan, I did not see or find a sandbox.
I created an account, but any way to "kick the tires" without
disrupting a wiki?
I found the sandbox here;
http://biocc.kobic.re.kr/index.html/index.php/Sandbox
I see (what I thought was) the FCKEditor when I click edit. Perhaps
some browsers are blocking the FCKEditor java script?
For example, I see buttons to create lists, headings, indentation,
links, tables, images, etc., etc. Indeed the editor produces HTML,
which is a major drawback if users simply want to 'switch it off' -
most experienced MW users tend to prefer MW syntax to the slightly
slow and slightly buggy WYSIWY-almost-G interface. However, until the
editor can be persuaded to produce MW output, which is then rendered
as HTML by the MW engine, it is not interoperable with pure MW syntax.
I.e. you either run the whole site using the FCKEditor forever, or
not. There is no capacity for users to swap editing 'modes'.
It seems like it would be simple to allow people to edit and save a
single section in the context of the whole page (i.e. an embedded edit
box). Also, it should be possible to map MW syntax onto the FCKEditor
output - its just a matter of rendering / saving content in a way that
makes sense.
FYI, some really nice sites in the BiO.CC umbrella project are here;
http://biowiki.net/index.php/3rd_Biowiki_contest_winners
These sites were winners in the 'Openfree International BioWiki
Contents Competition', for example (1st place)
http://bioinformatist.org - which also uses the 'BioWiki' editor, and
~~~spam!!!~~~ my own (1st place) entry which is here;
http://biodatabase.org - which uses straight MW (+ a few extensions).
Dan.
Subject: Re: [Mediawiki-l] Mediawiki ease of use
My friend has worked extensively on integrating the FCKEditor with MW.
They call the resulting hybrid 'BioWiki' (he is a bioinformatician).
They run a whole farm of wikies, all organised from the central
http://bio.cc site. Just fire it up and click edit to see what its
like (I assume its more or less identical to any other FCKEditor / MW
hybrid, however, they have put in considerable effort to make it
work).
Some nice sites on the farm are linked here,
