[Mediawiki-l] image resizing does not work despite beeing activated

I realy need some help - I installed 1.9.3 on Suse OpnenLinux 10.2 on 
PHP5.2 with GD enabled but the tumbnail feature simply does not work. 
phpinfo() tells me GD is active and everything seems OK and 
$wgUseImageResize = true; has been set in LocalSettings.php

The images are also not displayed on their image page if they are that 
large that they would be resized - it seems as if resizing would not be 
activated or as if the graphics library would not work but I see no 
indication in phpinfo() or in the .ini files or mediawiki configuration.
