[Mediawiki-l] need special permissions for polling Wikipedia api?

Hi,

Does it take any special permissions to poll the Wikipedias for recent 
changes every five minutes or so? I mean, in the long run my IP address 
would show up in statistics somewhere and then... what? "Abuse"?

Or is it OK to just keep the queries somewhat small (like 5 minute 
intervals for recentChanges etc)?

Are there possibly any mirror sites (with separate dedicated addresses 
for replicas) for providing services like this?
