[Mediawiki-l] Alternate images

Is there a way to display a default image instead of
the gray box when the file hasn't been uploaded yet?
Clicking on this default would generate the same
action as it does now.

It would behave something like a |default=default.png|
parameter to [[image:...]]

Perhaps there is a way I missed to see if a page exists and
if not to generate some custom HTML.
