[Mediawiki-l] Usage of the meta description tag

Hi,

as far as I can see, MediaWiki does currently not provide a meta
description tag such as

<meta name="description" content="India, officially the Republic of
India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country
by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the
largest liberal democracy in the world."/>

for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India.

It seems that several search engines make use of such a tag, such as google.

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-27,GGGL:en&q=site%3Alexikon.meyers.de

will give out every indexed page on lexikon.meyers.de (which is a
pretty hacked MediaWiki, by the way). The "Erfahren sie mehr über
$LEMMA in Meyers Lexikon online." is coming from the description part.

Is there a point in having such a tag for MediaWiki (the first x chars
of the leadsection text of that page) and therefore, is there a point
in filing a feature request on bugzilla for it?

Mathias
