As I understand it, there are a few different ways.
However, I'll share with you how I did it.
First, make a dump of your database for backup purposes if everything goes
horribly wrong.
Then copy your extensions an imgaes directories. Also copy any settings for
extensions in your LocalSettings.php.
Then I just started with a clean installation of Mediawiki 1.7.1. Make a
directory for it or clear out your old mediawiki directory (make sure to
back it up!) and then just extract the tarball into the directory or extract
the tarball locally and move it all over to your server via FTP, PuTTY or
whatever you like.
Then follow the regular installation instructions, making sure that the
required directories have the right permissions. Run the web installer,
enter the IDENTICAL data you had from your previous installation and the
installer will detect your old database, update the schema for you and
generate a new LocalSettings.php. Move it from the config directory to the
installation path and put your extension calls back in.
Next, copy your old extensions and images directories back into the
installation path and you should be all set.
It is suggested you run the link refresh php script after completing the
update, as I understand it.
Hope this helps and that I didn't miss anything.

Dave Pace
