[Mediawiki-l] LogPage variable updateRecentChanges

On MW 1.5.6 .... in in the source of LogPage.php there's a variable called
updateRecentChanges ( = true)

If I change that to false will it stop blocks/deletes/protects from showing
up in the Recent Changes?  As an admin/sysop doing maintenance etc, I don't
think I need my users to see that stuff

Just asking if I can change the variable there, or if maybe I should change
it in LocalSettings.php
