I checked for /var/www/mediawiki/serialized and did not find it. So, I
compared FC6 version of mediawiki and the one from
mediawiki.org and found
that the FC6 version (1.8.2-5fc6) did not have the serialized directory
listed.
I then created the serialized directory and copied the contents into it:
Makefile
README
serialize-localisation.php
serialize.php
Utf8Case.ser
restarted webserver and tried to search and save changes to pages and still
get the same error message. Is there some setting that I need to set? Is
there a way to find out where mediawiki is looking for the file?

Utf8Case.ser is missing, please run "make" in the serialized directory
Sounds like you should run "make" in the "serialized" directory...
;)
That file should be included already, though, so make sure that you have
in fact installed all the files!
If you installed from a third-party package, try removing the package
and installing manually. Report problems with third-party packages to
the packager.
