At line 1545 (or around that) you'll find the following lines:

		$toolbar.="document.writeln(\"</div>\");\n";
		$toolbar.="/*]]>*/\n</script>";
		return $toolbar;

So I put the hook above that.

Not sure if it is the right place but I can see the checker button on
the Wiki.

    At what line did you put the hook? Under 1.6.6 I can find no
    lines analogous to the ones the documentation is talking about.
