[Mediawiki-l] invalid XML-declaration when asking for rss feed

I cannot get MW 1.6.5. to display the rss and atom feeds right. Searching high and low for a solution and meticulously removing all the whitespace I could find in my files... all I get is this from my browser. I'm using IE 7beta, but it gives the same for Firefox.

Invalid XML-declaration.
Line: 2 Character: 3

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

Any ideas?
