) to show
the current shotbox. And you could add an inputbox and a submit button and
make it post to any shoutbox software to update the database.
The extension mechanism in MediaWiki is really powerful and not too
difficult to understand.

Glad you like the idea (I expected heavy skepticism)!
A search at
Hotscripts.com returned a dazzling 84 results:
http://tinyurl.com/y6c58o (less opaque, more trostworthy links below)
So that leaves me with two problems:
1) Which of those to choose? (Well, I could try the top 5, I guess... )
2) How to integrate the shoutbox module into MediaWiki?
As for #2, there are a couple of things we should consider:
a) There should be a global shoutbox as well a seperate one for each
individual page (the latter allowing discussion on that particular page,
e.g. to prevent simultaneous editing).
b) If possible, the shoutbox module should use the MediaWiki
registration data to allow for a unified, once-for-all login.
Accordingly, if the wiki allows anonymous posting, so should the shoutbox.
c) Interface-wise, it'd be great if the shoutbox could be
collapsed/expanded, would float above the page and could be resized and
re-positioned. (Conditions 1 and 2 can probably be implemented using
CSS, but I'm not sure about condition 3... )
d) Registered user should be able to turn off the shout box altogether.
Hmm, looks like it's not that simple after all...
