I appreciate your help. I came across this article as well.
My problem is that to address our wiki we are just using the hostname
i.e.
http://servername/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
Adding the following to my user.js file did nothing.
user_pref("capability.policy.policynames", "localfilelinks");
user_pref("capability.policy.localfilelinks.sites",
"http://servername");
user_pref("capability.policy.localfilelinks.checkloaduri.enabled",
"allAccess");
I did a test and added another domain that we use to my user.js file and
it worked (kind of) so I know that I put the file in the right place
when I tried it with just the server name.
Even when I got it working with a domain that actually ended in .net it
still didn't work all that well. Middle clicking on it opened an empty
browser window. Single clicking on it did nothing, but I was able to
right click and save it which is more than I was able to do before I
added it to the user.js.
Anyway, this is beyond the scope of the mediawiki list.
Personally I don't see how it is a security problem for a browser to
open a link to a local intranet server or something on your own hard
drive. If some random web site has placed a mischievous file on your
internal file server or your own machine then you've already got a
problem.

Anyway, now that I corrected it in my
LocalSettings.php the links are
there but they don't work from Firefox but that is a different issue I
guess.
Check out this article for Firefox access to file:// links:
