Well, MediaWiki is coded for the needs of the Wikimedia Foundation, and 
they require non-destructive capability in a WYSIWYG editor.  This is 
going to take a long time and probably not going to be achieved by 
hacking in solutions which have nothing to do with wikitext.

If you require WYSIWYG functionality in a wiki, MediaWiki is not for 
you.  This is simple and in fact honest.  There are other software 
products out there which are more suitable, and you'd be better off 
looking for one.

That doesn't necessarily mean that finally incorporating a robust, 
accurate WYSIWYG wikitext editor into MediaWiki would not be 
exciting--it would be excellent!  But it's not going to happen any time 
soon and the focus is on doing it *right*, not *fast*.

So all things being equal, it *isn't* worth waiting for.
