[Mediawiki-l] upgrading to 1.6

I was running mediawiki-1.4.5-3mdk.noarch on mandriva 2006 x86 and 
followed the upgrade instructions here:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Upgrading_MediaWiki

but I'm stuck.  I cp'ed all the new files into the root directory as 
it says but when I try the upgrade script:

php ./maintenance/update.php
MySQL functions missing, have you compiled PHP with the --with-mysql option?

It was working before and I know I have the php-mysql rpm installed 
... I even have a dump of my site.  Any suggestions?
