I use mozex to edit text areas in vim:

  http://mozex.mozdev.org/  

This all works on the client side so no changes are needed on the
server.

It works fine, though it would be better if I found time to make it open
gvim with utf-8 encoding and a black background... ;-)

Another option is lynx or w3m -- these are textmode browsers that can be
set to use an external editor of your choice.
