[Mediawiki-l] Graphing data?

What would be the best approach to auto display data as simple graph images?
For example, "population over time" (in years).

I assume the data would need to be in a mySQL table.
Is the best solution to use an extension and then use php to generate the 
table?
If so, does the standard php graphics addon provide the tools? (?Graphix? 
Magix?)
If so, anyone have a link bookmarked for documentation?
