Can you provide more information about what "it fails the save edit
process" means? I can save such a line in a page without problem.

Is there an error message?

Anything in your PHP error log? In your apache error log?

Is error reporting enabled in PHP?

Does save vs preview have an effect?

What version of MediaWiki are you running? What version of PHP?

What kind of web server configuration are you running? Is something like
mod_security installed by your system administrator to try to filter out
code injection attacks by simply looking for the names of Unix shell
commands in incoming form data? Can you submit other forms containing
thise text, or is only the wiki affected?

There are probably several but I don't have the references. Check the
mailing list archives (searchable via google).
