Mostly as a factor of overcaution.  When we did the analysis of what to
whitelist, we proceeded on grounds of "are we absolutely sure this is
okay" rather than "we know this must be removed".

I agree that, as a rule, that information may/should be made available
if possible although readding a null column is a non-trivial operation.
