[Foundation-l] Google Analytics on Wikimania site

Far from it. When we're talking about a program with the ability to
track what sites visitors are coming from (for instance, LGBT or
other oppressed groups sites), and that information possibly being
protected by our privacy policy, added to the fact that we don't even
know who the person running the analytics program is sharing that
information with, presents a real threat. I'm amazed you would
consider it a non-sequitur.

I don't wish to turn this topic into an Egypt thread because that's
an 08 thing, not 07, but you're talking about an oppressive
government with a history of tracking and arresting gays (all
established in the other threads), possibly having access to private
data that allows them to scan what websites users are going to, in
some cases identify those websites to particular users, in some cases
even identify WHO those users are, all because someone was allowed to
install an analytic program, without individual user's having the
ability to opt-in and opt-out. Yes, I know that we know who installed
the program. We don't know who he shared that information with.
THAT's the problem. Given that there are security concerns regarding
the 08 Wikimania, it's far from a non-sequitur to think that those
security conditions could be exacerbated by mishandling of private
information.

In fact, what's to stop them from turning over the Wikimania 07
information to Egypt for purposes of tracking someone at Wikimania
08? Certainly some of the people are going to go to both.

So no, it's not a non-sequitur. It's a serious concern, one among
many even more serious concerns regarding this breach of our privacy
policy. The fact that I initially confused the 07 wikimania with the
08 one notwithstanding, the concern is not alleviated.
