It's fun to joke about stuff like this... But the reality is that some
people honestly can't tell if remarks along these lines are serious or
not.  Some of the people who can't tell are quite reasonable people. I
think that instead of making light of this, we should quietly consider
why offhand remarks like this get taken seriously.
