If the WMF had thanked large donors from the beginning, no one would
object at all. It's just the nature of the Internet that the WMF has
been able to operate on so little money for so long. That's no longer
the case with the current size.

Contrary to most people's perceptions, establishing the matching
contributions has not been an easy task. So, it's not that the WMF has
suddenly decided to "sell out." It just hasn't been necessary or
practical to establish matching contributions in the past.
