I agree with the point of this post.

I don't think we ought to be supporting a patent-encumbered format for
which there are no free tools for creating and editing.

We've been making a lot of progess in making the videos in free
formats on wikimedia accessible to Joe and Jane Average User, to the
point where it is no more difficult to simply play than flash (and I
tried this out today, on a public Windows computer which had neither
Java nor Flash installed to begin with).

Because of this, I do not see why we need to compromise on this issue.
