Nobody actually knows what is going on now with any of the tools that over the years
became essential and have not worked properly or have not worked at all since they were
moved from the ToolServer to WMF Labs.
As far as I understand, a major problem is with the lack of the promised
service/mainteance/development by te WMF of their Labs environment which according to them
at the time the wrested it from de.Wiki was going to be light years more efficient and
advanced. In contrast, we have only a few of the tools working while thers are exaperating
slow - if thy dont time out before they have produced a result.
The problems have been exacebated by users with IT skills having been blocked, banned,
biting off more tan they could chew, or simply retired for reasons in RL. Sadly this is
all getting us nowhere.
One admin suggested recently we all chip in to pay someone. I’m curious why nobody has
applied for a grant - the WMF is begging for applicants.

Hello there,
I code in PHP, Javascript and Python and have a specific 'want', which is to
improve the xtools gadget <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Hedonil/XTools>
browser plugin-like thing (which I think will involve the file xtools/api.php) that
currently shows revisions/authors etc. so it can show more data on hover dropdown (like
top 10 authors). I've been using this gadget for a year, and it still works but I
notice that the full page statistics and pageviews links no longer seem to work.
I don't know much about the current state of these tools, but I may also be up for
making some other contributions if needed, depending on their complexity.
I've had a brief look over the mailing list archives and it looks like there is some
dissatisfaction with the old code and a rewrite is in progress? (I see the xtools-rebirth
repo on github). If someone could give me a brief overview of what's happening with
xtools and where things are going that would be great, and an idea of how I can
contribute my idea.
