Hello all,

Please see this email from Kelsi Stine-Rowe regarding updates to the WMF Movement strategy. There will be more to discuss in the new year.

Best,

Esther

Subject: Movement strategy end of year update and next steps

Dear Strategy Liaisons,

Hello and happy December! Nicole has shared some recent updates on wikimedia-l and Wikimedia Space [1] [2] that I wanted to bring to your attention. These are about the progress in the movement strategy process as we approach the end of the year. Here below, I also have some Strategy Liaison specific updates for you and your affiliate community. :)

tl;dr: We're preparing for a final round of community conversations around a synthesized set of draft recommendations early next year. In the meantime, recommendations’ writers and our team of contracted Strategy Liaisons have been hard at work integrating your ideas and feedback into these recommendations. Thank you, for all of your contributions!

What's New?

The recommendations writers have been working to consolidate the 89 recommendations produced by the working groups. They recently met in Berlin for an in-person session to produce a synthesized recommendations document which will be shared for public comment early next year.

What's Next?

As Strategy Liaisons, I will be reaching out to you to help engage your affiliate communities in discussing this new synthesized version and helping the recommendation writers as well as the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees understand how they will affect your community and what final changes should be made before going forward. Your input in helping us refine and advance key ideas will be invaluable, and we are looking forward to engaging with you for a period of roughly six weeks, starting some time between January and February (more information to come).

What Can I Do Until Then?

In the meantime, you can help the movement strategy process by reaching out to your affiliate communities, sharing with them this process update, and brainstorming how you would like to meet and discuss the final draft recommendations when they are released next year. We hope that you will also help share the news about our upcoming community conversations, and convey our deep appreciation for the hard work, thoughtful responses, and creative ideas that have been have shared so far, whether through your strategy salons, joining us at global and regional events, joining online conversations, or sending in notes from affiliate discussions. We couldn't do this without you, and hope that you will enjoy seeing your input reflected in the next draft and final recommendations.

Anything Else?

On a final note, please also take a look at the Wikimedia Space discussions [3] hosted by our community-based team of contracted Strategy Liaisons. Rupika (Hindi), Anass (Arabic), Diane (French), Lucas (Portuguese), and Francesc (Spanish) have produced compelling blog pieces - in multiple languages - about their role as Strategy Liaisons what they've learned, and (coming soon) summaries of input from each language community. We welcome you to read and share their work, as well as to comment and ask questions as a way to deepen your involvement.

That's it for now, and we wish you an enjoyable remainder of 2019! You can expect to hear from me again with more information about next steps in early 2020.

Warmly,

Kelsi
