Thanks Wilson and Z.

Unfortunately there's extra levels of sensitivity around digitising and sharing First Nations works in Australia. This includes audio, video, and photographs. So although Bianca was initially interested to add work to Commons, she realised that the library catalogue often wasn't clear about who the photos were of, so it would be impossible to get proper permissions from community elders.

This often comes back to the openness of Creative Commons licenses, and a distrust around how things could be used in the future. That's an issue not just among First Nations groups here though, as I believe it's pretty common worldwide.

For those interested, Wikimedia Australia is attempting to document ways that Wikimedia projects present barriers for First Nations groups here, and we'll be publishing more on that later this year.

We'll also have some more residencies in the next 12 months around other projects so I look forward to sharing those with you all too once they're up and running.

Thanks again.

Indeed James, I have been eager to know more about Bianca's work. Thank you for the update.

Impressive pioneering work especially considering how residencies could, at the start,  be multidirectional all at once.

Sad about the photos. Interesting blog, particularly the section on challenges and opportunities. I am curious about the Indigenous materials, what digitisation process did she eventually use?

Best,

Wilson

Thank you for your work James! It sounds amazing and though not sufficient, essential pioneering work.

I hope you can consider releasing historic images that you can not trace the ownership of in some ways (maybe Flickr Commons?) and maybe encourage Bianca to repost to fediverse and not just instagram.

Also it would be amazing to hear-see at least samples of audio-video available from archive onto Archive.org, if not being able to release it on Commons.

Hi all,

I know a lot of you were keen to hear more about Bianca's work as First Nations Wikipedian in Residence for Wikimedia Australia.

She was improving information about First Nations music and musicians, using the resources available at State Library of Queensland.

She has completed her initial residency there, and we have now extended it as a remote residency so she can build on the skills she's learnt over the past couple of months.

Unfortunately, most of the images used in the article can't be added to Commons so we won't be reposting this one to Diff.

Cheers
