Hello Dumi et al,

Your suggestion couldn't have come at a better time. About 4 of the WISCOM members were at the WikiConvention Francophonie and we took the opportunity to meet and discuss some of the goals and plans of WISCOM.

Our first line of discussion tackled the selection process of future hosts, especially towards the selection of the 2020 host country. We suggested that Goerges and Zeineb (who were both present) should lead the process as the four other committee members are occupied with the scholarship and programs committee work respectively. We thought it will be good to have some background and research (tentative document) done prior to a committee meeting on the subject to ensure easy and smooth decision making. We think after this we can have a meeting to discuss the timeline and selection process.

In view of this we suggested that the committee should submit a session dubbed Future of Indaba, during which the 2020 host country will be announced and a few important information about WISCOM and future Indaba preparations announced.

We also discussed roles and responsibilities of members based on our goals and these are what we came up with (in no particular order):
Partnership Coordinator - Reda
  • Partnership between Africa and other organised groups or committees in the movement
  • Championing cross collaboration and cross affiliate partnerships across the continent and beyond
  • Ensuring participation from the continent in other relevant regional collaborative programs
Community Engagement Coordinator - Georges
  • Supporting new communities and individuals that require assistance
  • Gather learning patterns and share best practices
  • Informing the community about upcoming projects that could interest them
  • Gathering cool and amazing projects that are happening around the continent
  • Share international projects for local and regional actions
Operations Coordinator - Felix
  • Programmatic support between conferences
  • Facilitate a bidding process for the selection of future hosts
  • Support with the grant making process of the LOC (if required)
  • Work on standardising the organization of Wiki Indaba (Hotel and accommodation, city, internet access, transport, program, activities, etc.)
Communications Coordinator -  Zeineb
  • Marketing the event in countries that do not have a Wikipedia presence
  • Managing all social media outfits
  • Publishing the minutes of WISCOM meetings
  • Creating and managing communication materials for the community
  • Communicating important information on behalf of the committee to the community
Scholarship Coordinator - Bobby
  • Management of scholarships application and awarding process
  • Creating and managing documentations on past scholarship recipients and tracking their impacts
  • Create a wealth of knowledge or data on all recipients that can inform future scholarship awards
Program Coordinator - Houcemeddine Turki
  • Support the creation of the annual programme for Wiki Indaba
  • Create the themes of the conference and ensure alignment with program creation
  • Ensuring yearly themes resonate with future goals or objectives of the conference
We also suggested 2 new additions to our goals
  • Recognise and reward African Wikimedians doing amazing things (African Wikimedian of the Year Award :-))
  • Market cool and amazing projects from the continent
Lastly we discussed projects that we could work on (which we believe must be further discussed)
  • The areas of knowledge to be promoted or realized on the continent (local languages, chiefdoms, kingdoms, old architectures, GLAM, etc.)
  • African Local Language Month
  • Wiki MOOC
NB: All the above texts are suggestions from 4 members of the team so you may write to either accept or reject the whole or parts of the proposition. For Booby and Turki, you were suggested for the two roles because you have mentioned or initially shown interest in the assigned role. As mentioned its not final so kindly communicate your thoughts and position on any parts of this.

Kindly remember at all times to send emails to our mailing list - wiscom@lists.wikimedia.org

Regards from cold Lyon,
Felix Nartey.

Good day WISCOM members

Now that Wiki Indaba - Nigeria 19, is off the ground and moving, it's time to start thinking about Wiki Indaba 20.

Can we convene a meeting to discuss this and possibly:

- Proposal submission Guidelines
- Selection process
- Timelines

I will defer to your Secretariat to finalise meeting dates and times.

Kindest regards

Dumi
