Hi All, I attended the final performance of Othello last Sunday, and it was excellent. The play is like a symphony, though a dark one, and this year's class played it masterfully. I had forgotten just how wicked Iago is! We did Othello my summer in 85, and I remember Brian Foster's melodious voice as Othello.
I haven't posted here before, but I wanted to share an interesting strand of Shakespeare studies and performance that I get notices about. I have not seen any of their performances, but I find this whole adaptation of the bard to the border fascinating.
Cheers, Lennie

For several decades, playwrights in the U.S.–Mexico Borderlands region have been adapting, translating, and remaking Shakespeare’s plays to reflect the histories, cultures, and lived realities of La Frontera, a contested area encompassing Northern Mexico and parts of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The second volume of The Bard in the Borderlands: An Anthology of Shakespeare Appropriations en La Frontera continues to celebrate and honor this rich tradition.
This volume showcases works by esteemed playwrights that reimagine The Merchant of Venice, The Winter’s Tale, Measure for Measure, and The Comedy of Errors:
-
The Merchant of Santa Fe by Ramón A. Flores and Lynn Knight -
Invierno by José Cruz González -
Measure for Measure | Medida por medida by Bernardo Mazón Daher -
La Comedia of Errors by Lydia G. Garcia and Bill Rauch
