Ernie, it's true that any response to the list will go to everyone on it -- at least for right now. In the longer term, I can set the default so that anyone who responds to a list posting sends email directly to the poster and not to the list. I'll rely on list members to tell me when to do that.
In the short term, you can probably set your email client to filter mails from "Winedale-l" into a particular folder or mailbox to read at your convenience (and they'll be segregated from your regular mail).
If/when I reset the defaults, people will need expressly to type the "winedale-l@lists.wikimedia.org" address to send mail to the entire list.
My suggestion is that, starting out, we leave the defaults as they are, to make sure everyone gets in contact with everyone else and then after a week or two set them so that nobody emails to the list unless he or she deliberately chooses to do so.
