Thanks everyone for all of these wonderful words. It was a difficult experience that I am grateful (as crazy as that seems) I had experienced and grateful to be here in Austin in safety.  I was a bit too dense to know how scared I should have been at the the time of the storm; this density can be a mixed blessing.  If anyone has connections with any of the hurricane gods or others, please put the people, plants, and animals out there on the Islands in your thoughts and prayers.   Maria has grown to a Cat 5 storm.  May some miracle happen and she be taken to sea where she can do no more harm.

Love and hugs,
stan

I am very grateful to learn that Stan and Eri survived Irma, and

Ditto to what everyone says, Stan.. wow, so glad you made it out of there
and didn't have damage to your house.  How frightening.  Will send a
donation too.   Like others have said, I hope you'll write about this.  Or
paint about it at least...and I am so glad you are ok...

Btw, re: "the horses mouth". ...there's serendipity in this email chain...
the first book we read In our Austinite Winedale 75 bookgroup (formed right
after we all went to see you all in that great 2010 reunion play )  was The
Horses Mouth, by Joyce Cary.  Why?  Because in 1975 when I asked the
wonderful, literary, poetic, and sadly late ex-Winedalian Donald Britton
what to  read now that I was finished with college and could read whatever I
wanted,  he said 3 books:  The Horses Mouth, Lolita, and Under the Volcano.
The Horses Mouth became my favorite book of all time.  When we formed our
bookgroup we started with the first 2, in honor of Donald.  (Haven't done
Under The Volcano, because we'd all read it and decided it was too
depressing to re-read)..

Welcome home!

Terry,

Thanks!  And how did you do when Irma hit?  We had no good news about Irma’s
path while we were on the Island. NOAA weather radio went dead about an hour
into the storm.  We had a crank radio that gave us some news from Puerto
Rico and St. Croix after the storm.  Did you get hit hard?  Love ones okay?

Bless all of you generous souls for giving.

Love and hugs,
The horse’s mouth.

Hey Stanley!
I had heard from Susan Todd that you and Eri were safe but happy to hear it
from the horse's  mouth. We love you, sweetie and will add St John to our

Keep our fingers crossed that Hurricane Marie fizzles before arrival
Love to you and everyone in this list!
Keep safe!

Hello All,

I have just returned from the tempest that was Irma.  Eri Weinstein and I
weathered Irma on St. John hunkered down in a laundry room in the dark for
about eight hours.  I was one of the fortunate, blessed, comfortable ones
with a roof still over my head when the songs of the tree frog’s signaled
the end of the storm.  Their song’s belied the devastation.  Thanks to the
efforts of Kathy Blackbird and Craig Hurwitz, we were was finally able to
leave St John by fishing boat to St. Croix after about a week.  After
experiencing and witnessing the devastation, I am compelled to help as much
as I can from the safety of Austin, until I can get back to the Island.

I am writing to ask for donations for those still left on the Island.  If
any of you have any money left to be donated after all of the donations I am
sure you have given to Harvey’s victims, please make your donations the St
John Community Foundation  donate
http://www.thestjohnfoundation.org/donate    They have been working with St.
John for years. Even a small amount will help someone to water, food, or
bedding.

Thank you.  Love and Hugs.
