I think so too.  One thought I had is that it might be worth creating a project to digitize all the old photos we have and set them up on a Flickr-like or Wiki-like website, enabling everyone else to come in and tag the photos, ID people, and comment.

It's a project that is a little beyond my scope at the moment, but I could advise.
