This is a generic problem. There are many "temporary project" or "fixed life" wikis (not necessarily a bad thing, they provide focus). There will be more in future. Hence cross-posting this thought here.
 
Maybe a subdomain "archive.wikimedia.org" could be set  up, with old closed wikis marked as non-editable and moved to subdomains of this, and an index of archived wikis available on the front index page? So when it's no longer in use, "ten" would end up at "ten.archive.wikimedia.org" (with the old domain redirected) and be readily located by anyone interested future.
