You dont need it to be featured for it to be your project. Featured means that various people think its a good project and there are two people willing to mentor. Getting a project featured is usually more a concern of mentors who are trying to attract a student, rather than the student.

We are in fact discussing how appropriate it is to feature it but, as you can see at https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57805#c6 Mark (MultimediaViewer maintainer) thinks that it might have significant overlap with the work they are planning to do this year.
Considering the GSoC deadlines, if there is no progress this week between Mark, Dereckson and others, I'd recommend you to put your bets in another project.
