That's exactly what the mobile team is working on. There is a good deal of
content about mobile MediaWiki at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mobile_projects, and on
MediaWiki.org.
If you opt in to the mobile website's beta, there's a lot of interesting
stuff to see, with the obvious caveat that not all of it will become
permanent or is in perfect working order yet.
