Why not using the mpg or mpeg extensions ? ;)
I'm a little leary of that too, as MPEG 4 is a fairly new format
encapsulated by something resembling Quicktime. Since there are
undoubtedly many players that can play older MPEG by not newer MPEG, I
think the version-specific suffix is appropriate.
I wasn't aware of the new MPEG4 format, I was thinking about Mpeg Layer4
